Chris Franz’s photography explores the idea of place and how photography describes it. The acts of pointing, collecting, and creating visual lists are vital in his work. This process allows him to describe a place while reflecting on the medium itself. Chris's recent projects delve into the friction between literal description and interpretation, capturing the layered meanings that places hold.
Chris is a photographer living in Bismarck, ND, where he currently teaches photography, design and visual communication at the University of Mary.
Chris received a BA in Photojournalism from Minnesota State University Moorhead and an MA in Documentary Photography from Ohio University. His wife, Beverly, is also an artist, and they have a lovely dog named Jo.
