In 2013, I created Survey, a self-published magazine project, that examined the complexities of place. This edition focused on the Dakota War of 1862, a pivotal yet often overlooked conflict between the United States and the Dakota people of Minnesota and North Dakota. Through photographs of battle sites (some well-known, others nearly forgotten), as well as modern places, I explored how history and memory shape the landscape.
My photographs do not attempt to resolve the complexities of these histories but instead invite reflection, allowing viewers to contemplate what remains hidden or unspoken.
